Welcome from the Department of Social Work! Currently the Department of Social Work has both graduate and undergraduate programs. Undergraduate program is called Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) in Social Work which has 5 batches with 303 students. Graduate program comprises with three independent programs namely Master of Social Sciences (MSS) in Social Work (100 students), Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) (07 students) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (04 students) in Social Work. The objectives of all programs are to produce generic social workers. The BSS in Social Work program is designed with 140 credit hours to be completed within 4 years. The curriculum covers courses on methods and techniques of social work, social work education, social research, urban and rural community development, public health, behavioral science, physiology, human rights and social justice, disaster management and disabilities issues. The MSS in Social Work program is designed for 2 semesters for general and 3 semesters for thesis students. These programs offer courses including advanced social research, international social work, human rights, aging, child and family welfare, labor relations, marriage and divorce and counseling. Both of the programs require internship for 1 full semester. Students are placed in different development organizations to practice social work in practical settings.
The department has collaboration with both national and international academic and professional organizations. Winona State University and Monmouth University, USA is linked with the department as academic partners and already hosted seminars and workshops with joint efforts. Faculties from the three institutions are exchanged and now students exchange program is started. Two MSW students of Monmouth University is currently pursuing their internship program under the supervision of two professor of the department. The department has MoU with American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS) and Save the Children. Seminars and workshops are organized regularly with joint collaboration under these agreements.
The alumni of our department are serving with various government and non-government organizations. Moreover few are also serving as volunteers in different communities who are disadvantaged and marginalized. Our graduates are serving in the field of community development across Bangladesh. A good number of alumni are also pursuing their higher studies across the world and serving for the respective communities. The department has been preparing Social Work Graduates since 1994. Throughout this process we seek to increase our student’s knowledge of social problems and their solutions, to improve social conditions of the country and to promote social justice and human dignity for all people.
The department is committed to promote social justice and ensure community development through relentless efforts by the experienced and qualified faculty members and graduates.
